How to Know When Your Gutters Need Repairs

Gutters are useful structures that direct rainwater away from the home's foundation, exterior walls and fascia and protect them from water damage. However, they are among the most vulnerable parts of your home's exterior and are prone to damage. Identifying the signs of damage and repairing the gutters is paramount to protecting your home's structure from water damage which can cost you thousands of dollars in repairs. Here are some of the top signs that indicate your gutters need repairs.

Leaks in the Gutter

The most visible signs of gutter damage are leaks during the rainy season. They can be as a result of cracks due to impact during roof repair projects and falling branches from trees or rust due to old age. If you notice leaks, discolorations on your walls or peeling paint, your gutters are damaged, and they should be repaired immediately. If the crack widens, it can damage the fascia boards and roof shingles and cause the paint on your walls to peel off. If there are any trees in your home whose branches hang over the gutters, trim them to avoid future damage.

Sagging Gutters

You may notice that the gutters are pulling away from the walls or roof of the structure. This is an indication that the hangers are loose, and this causes the gutters to sag. Sagging gutters allow water to stagnate, causing them to sink lower. The water will end up flowing from the sides of the building without following the proper channels, and this can cause significant damage to the wall paint. Occasionally inspect the gutters from below and look out for spots that are lower than others. If there are any, a roofing contractor should fix them.

Signs of Mold

If you notice mold or mildew in your basement, below the gutters, or close to the top of the home's exterior walls, this is an indication that the gutters are not working as expected. Mold develops as a result of moisture, and it is not only an eyesore but also a source of respiratory conditions. Mold in the basement can render the space inhabitable until it is removed and the area cleaned. Note that water damage in the basement can weaken the entire structure; therefore, it should be handled by a professional contractor.

If the gutters in your home are inefficient, it may be time to invest in new ones. The cost of gutter replacements may be minimal compared to the losses that may accrue due to dealing with water damage on your wall, foundation, basement and other exterior parts of the home.
